A Pencil of Hope – Learning Inside a Tent in Gaza
Every morning, Yousef, a 9-year-old boy in Gaza, asks the same question:
“When will I go back to school?”
Yousef loved learning. He loved writing, solving math problems, and sitting in class with his friends.
But his school was destroyed. His classroom no longer exists.
Today, Yousef lives in a tent — without books, desks, or a blackboard.
Still, he dreams of continuing his education.
Education Has Collapsed
In Gaza, education has not been paused — it has collapsed.
More than 650,000 children are currently out of school, and over 97% of schools have been damaged or destroyed.
Thousands of children now live in tents or overcrowded shelters where learning is nearly impossible.
Without education, an entire generation risks being left behind.
Why A Pencil of Hope?
A Pencil of Hope was created for children like Yousef. He is living in Al Zawaida, South Gaza. We are launching this project now because, despite the announcement of a so-called ceasefire, the reality in Gaza has not improved. Reconstruction will take years, almost no buildings remain standing, borders open far too slowly, and humanitarian aid is repeatedly blocked. After two and a half years, parents and children are desperate to move forward with their lives. Help is not coming — so they are starting their own initiatives.

Target Group Pilot (Month 1)
- 12 Children Total, age 5-12.
- 7 children out of the 4 displaced households in the Nasser family
- 5 children from the neighbourhood around them, (selected by need)
These are children who lost their schools, and in many cases, their homes.
Final Purpose of the Project “A Pencil of Hope”.

This is a funding to start a 30-day learning pilot that brings education back in the simplest way possible — inside a tent.

Elke ochtend stelt Yousef, een 9-jarige jongen in Gaza, dezelfde vraag:
“Wanneer kan ik weer naar school?”
Yousef hield van leren. Hij hield van schrijven, van het oplossen van rekensommen en van samen met zijn vrienden in de klas zitten.
Maar zijn school is verwoest. Zijn klaslokaal bestaat niet meer.
Vandaag leeft Yousef in een tent — zonder boeken, schoolbanken of een schoolbord.
Toch droomt hij ervan om zijn onderwijs voort te zetten.
Onderwijs is ingestort
In Gaza is het onderwijs niet gepauzeerd — het is ingestort.
Meer dan 650.000 kinderen gaan momenteel niet naar school en meer dan 97% van de scholen is beschadigd of verwoest.
Duizenden kinderen leven nu in tenten of overvolle opvanglocaties waar leren vrijwel onmogelijk is.
Zonder onderwijs dreigt een hele generatie achter te blijven.
Waarom “A Pencil of Hope?”
A Pencil of Hope is opgericht voor kinderen zoals Yousef. Hij woont in Al Zawaida, Zuid-Gaza. We starten dit project nu omdat, ondanks de aankondiging van een zogenaamd staakt-het-vuren, de realiteit in Gaza niet is verbeterd.
De wederopbouw zal jaren duren, vrijwel geen enkel gebouw staat nog overeind, de grenzen gaan veel te langzaam open en humanitaire hulp wordt herhaaldelijk geblokkeerd.
Na tweeënhalf jaar staan ouders en kinderen te popelen om hun leven weer op te pakken. Hulp komt niet — daarom starten zij hun eigen initiatieven.

Al bijna twee jaar hebben duizenden kinderen in Gaza geen toegang meer tot school, klaslokalen, boeken, leerkrachten en veiligheid.
Onder hen zijn 7 kinderen uit mijn eigen familie — allemaal ontheemd, levend in tenten en beroofd van hun recht op onderwijs.
A Pencil of Hope is een kleinschalig, gemeenschapsgericht onderwijsinitiatief dat door mijn familie en mij is opgezet.
Missie A Pencil of Hope
Onderwijs terugbrengen naar kinderen — zelfs als dat in een tent moet.
Doelgroep pilot (maand 1)
Totaal: 12 kinderen, leeftijd 5–12 jaar
- 7 kinderen uit 4 ontheemde huishoudens binnen de familie Nasser
- 5 kinderen uit de directe omgeving (geselecteerd op basis van noodzaak)
Dit zijn kinderen die hun school hebben verloren — en in veel gevallen ook hun huis.
Einddoel van het project A Pencil of Hope
Voor de kinderen:
✔ Herstellen van basisvaardigheden (lezen, schrijven, rekenen, Engels)
✔ Psychologische verlichting bieden in een veilige leeromgeving
✔ Moeders ondersteunen door kinderen vaste leeruren te geven
✔ Een schaalbaar model ontwikkelen voor uitbreiding (20 → 40 → 100 kinderen)
Voor de moeders:
- Minder stress omdat ze even “vrij” zijn van de kinderen. Al 2,5 jaar hebben zij elke dag de kinderen rondom hun, in een kleine tent.
- Kinderen zijn enkele uren veilig en leerzaam bezig, met elkaar.
- Even pauze om te koken, schoon te maken of uit te rusten
Voor de gemeenschap:
- Een schaalbaar onderwijsmodel
- Een veilige gemeenschappelijke leeromgeving
- Basis voor langdurig onderwijs
Dit fonds is bedoeld om een 30-daagse leerpilot te starten die onderwijs op de meest eenvoudige manier terugbrengt — in een tent.

Nasser Family Learning & Community Project
The Nasser Family Learning & Community Project was born out of loss, resilience, and care for the wider community.
The Nasser family consists of four households, 15 family members, including 7 children. Since 7 October 2023, their lives have been completely disrupted. With the start of the genocide in Gaza, they lost their home, their jobs, and nearly all their possessions.
What they still have is each other.
The driving force behind the family’s resilience is Mohammed Nasser, a digital marketer. Since their displacement, Mohammed has kept his family afloat by using his professional skills for online fundraising. At the same time, he supports other young people in his community by teaching them digital skills so they, too, can raise funds to survive.
Together with his sister Madleen and sister-in-law Nesreen, Mohammed has tried to provide home-based education for their children. Madleen is a trained teacher, but teaching inside a family tent is extremely challenging: space is limited, materials are scarce, and children are easily distracted.
They noticed that the children needed more than lessons alone — they needed structure, social interaction, play, and the feeling of “real school” again.
They began experimenting by temporarily clearing out a tent and gathering the children together. From this small experiment, a bigger idea emerged:
Why not include other children from the neighbourhood as well?
Not only for the children — but also for the mothers, who for more than two and a half years have been trying, day after day, with almost no resources, to give their children a life with dignity.
From this shared need, A Pencil of Hope was born:
a small, community-based learning initiative — created by the Nasser family, for their children and the children around them.
Personal Connection
My name is Brigitte de Ruijter-Wendelgelst, a Dutch woman currently living in Austria. I came into contact with Mohammed through LinkedIn. Over time, he shared with me some of the most harrowing periods of his life, when he and his family were under heavy bombardment and directly targeted by gunfire.
We began working together on his crowdfunding efforts, combining his on-the-ground reality with my support from abroad.
A Pencil of Hope is the newest idea to grow out of that collaboration.
I have the deepest admiration for the resilience and courage of Mohammed, his family, and their community. Creating this fundraiser is my way of contributing — standing alongside them and helping turn their determination into something that protects children, supports mothers, and keeps learning alive.
