Freedom Fee: Escape from Forced Conscription
Queer anti-militarist forced to pay €6000+ to avoid TRNC military. Seeking solidarity to recover from this coercive debt.
I am Andreas, a 26-year-old resident of the Netherlands. I am seeking support to alleviate a significant financial burden imposed on me by the mandatory conscription laws of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Context and Legal Situation:
As the child of a Cypriot mother, I hold TRNC citizenship by birth. This citizenship mandates compulsory military service for individuals assigned male at birth. For me, a queer man and a committed anti-militarist, service in this institution was not an option. Reports from organizations like Kuir Cyprus document systematic issues within the TRNC military, including homophobia, transphobia, and abuse. The official exemption process for amab (assigned male at birth) queer individuals is notoriously traumatic, involving prolonged psychological evaluations based on discriminatory stereotypes and offering no guarantee of release.
The Financial Penalty:
After legal research, I identified the only viable and certain alternative: a legal clause for citizens born and residing abroad. This provision allows for demobilization upon payment of a fee of 310,000 Turkish Lira (approximately €6,000+) and proof of continuous residence overseas.
Faced with an untenable choice between a hostile military environment and a financially crippling penalty, I chose the latter to protect my safety and integrity. I have paid this fee in full, which has exhausted my personal savings and incurred debt.
Political Stance and Principle:
My action is a principled refusal. I view mandatory conscription as a coercive structure of state control, incompatible with my anti-fascist, anti-militarist, and anarcho-communist convictions. This payment was a necessary act of resistance against a system that equates citizenship with forced service.
Call for Mutual Aid:
I am reaching out to communities of solidarity, particularly in the Netherlands and internationally, who understand the intersections of state coercion, queer liberation, and anti-militarism.
Funds raised will be used exclusively to:
- Repay the debt incurred from the demobilization fee.
- Cover related administrative and bank transfer costs.
By contributing, you are not offering charity, but engaging in an act of solidarity and mutual aid. You are helping to rectify a financial penalty levied for the refusal to participate in a system of oppression.
I am prepared to provide redacted copies of relevant official documents to verify my status and the incurred cost.
Thank you for your consideration and support.
In solidarity,
Andreas
