Help MeRO to pay the treatment
Medical Rehabilation Organisation streeft ernaar om de allerarmste mensen te helpen hun de zorg te geven die zij nodig hebben
Lieve allemaal,
Momenteel verricht ik via de Nederlandse stichting Care4Nepal vrijwilligerswerk in Nepal bij het revalidatiecentrum ‘ Medical Rehabillation Organisation’ (MeRO). Dit revalidatiecentrum is 7 jaar geleden opgezet door Samrat Singh Bassnet. Samrat streeft ernaar om de allerarmste mensen te helpen hun de zorg te geven die zij nodig hebben.
De zorg in Nepal is niet voor iedereen weggelegd. Privéklinieken zijn voor vele onbetaalbaar en de goedkopere lokale ziekenhuizen hebben een lange wachtlijst waardoor zij niet gelijk geholpen kunnen worden. Dit is niet bevorderlijk voor het ziektebeeld en kan daardoor de ziekte of aandoening verergeren. Daarnaast is het de vraag of het ziekenhuis in een dorp de patiënt al kan behandelen. Niet alle ziekenhuizen kunnen alle aandoeningen en ziektes behandelen. De patiënt is dan genoodzaakt om een ziekenhuis elders te zoeken, wat extra kosten met zich meebrengt. Hierdoor lopen mensen soms maandenlang met lichamelijke klachten rond. Op dit moment verblijven er 10 patiënten in het centrum. De patiënten zijn jong en oud en hebben allemaal hun eigen verhaal. Om wat voorbeelden te geven:
-Jongetje M. 6 jaar heeft een tumor aan de rechterhelft van zijn gelaat. Zijn vader heeft twee keer een deel van zijn land moeten verkopen om zijn zoon te kunnen laten opereren. Helaas tevergeefs, de tumor is opnieuw teruggekomen. De tumor bereidt zich langzaam uit waardoor het jongetje het zicht in zijn rechteroog is verloren.
-Meneer P. 56 jaar is aangevallen door een beer toen hij zijn geiten probeerde te redden. Hij heeft door deze aanval een flinke bijtwond in zijn rug, hand en is gescalpeerd. De man is naar het ziekenhuis in zijn dorp gebracht maar helaas konden zij niks voor hem doen door het gebrek aan middelen. Zij sturen hem door naar het ziekenhuis in Kathmandu. Helaas heeft het ziekenhuis in Kathmandu geen plek voor hem. Twee dagen later heeft MeRO hem opgevangen en verbleef hij een nacht bij de organisatie om de volgende dag naar een ander ziekenhuis gebracht te worden. Toen ik zijn verband mocht verschonen merkte ik dat hij geen behoefte heeft aan zorg en hij wilde het liefst zo snel mogelijk naar huis. Meneer heeft geiten waar hij voor moet zorgen; dit is zijn bron van inkomsten. Hij heeft geen familie of netwerk om zich heen die hem kunnen ondersteunen.
-Jongetje B. 5 jaar heeft zijn rechterbeen verbrand toen hij net was geboren. Vanuit hun cultuur is het gebruikelijk om pasgeborene warm te houden bij het openvuur. Toen hij werd neergelegd bij het vuur, rolde hij met zijn benen erin. Dit heeft ertoe geleidt dat zijn rechterbeen volledig is verbrand, hij is zijn voet verloren en staat zijn been in een kromme stand. Ook mist hij een deel van zijn linkervoet.
De patiënten worden op dit moment gezien door verschillende artsen. Jongetje M. heeft mogelijk chemo nodig, of ze snijden volledig zijn rechterkant van het gelaat weg en laten het opnieuw reconstrueren door een plastische chirurg (echter, door zijn leeftijd is het onzeker hoe het gezicht mee zal groeien met de reconstructie). Meneer P. bevindt zich in het ziekenhuis maar het is nog altijd onzeker of hij zijn zorg wil verderzetten. Het revalideren kan enkele maanden duren waardoor hij liever naar huis wil vanwege zijn inkomsten. Er wordt nu gekeken of verdere zorg in het ziekenhuis vanuit zijn dorp geregeld kan worden. Jongetje B. krijgt op dit moment chirurgische hulp om de contractuur van het been te behandelen.
Doordat MeRO een bekendere naam heeft gekregen in Nepal heeft dit ertoe geleidt dat de artsen vertrouwen in de organisatie hebben. In sommige gevallen behandelen zij de patienten goedkoper of gratis. Echter worden de overige zorgkosten niet vergoed. Denk aan; diagnostiek (Rontgen, MRI, bloedprikken, echo) en/of de nazorg (medicatie, hulpmiddelen etc.).
Deze mensen hebben jullie steun hard nodig. Door te doneren kan de zorg gegeven worden die zij nodig hebben. Ook al kun je geen grote bedragen doneren, met kleine bedragen kan er al veel worden gedaan. Denk aan het aanschaffen van; verbandmiddelen, medicatie en/of hulpmiddelen wat uiteindelijk kan helpen tot een betere nazorg en een positiever toekomstperspectief voor de patiënten.

Dear All,
I am currently doing volunteer work in Nepal at the rehabilitation center 'Medical Rehabillation Organization' (MRO) through the Dutch foundation Care4Nepal. This rehabilitation center was set up 7 years ago by Samrat Singh Bassnet. Samrat strives to help the poorest people to give them the care they need.
Healthcare in Nepal is not for everyone. Private clinics are unaffordable for many and the cheaper local hospitals have a long waiting list so that they cannot be helped immediately. This is not conducive to the clinical picture, so the disease or condition can worsen. In addition, it is questionable whether the hospital in a village can already treat the patient. Not all hospitals can treat all conditions and diseases. The patient is then forced to look for a hospital elsewhere, which entails additional costs. As a result, people sometimes walk around with physical complaints for months. There are currently 10 patients in the center. The patients are young and old and all have their own story. To give some examples:
-Boy M. 6 years old has a tumor on the right half of his face. His father had to sell part of his land twice to allow his son to operate. Unfortunately in vain, the tumor has come back again. The tumor slowly spreads, causing the boy to lose sight in his right eye.
-Mr P. 56 years old was attacked by a bear when he was trying to save his goats. As a result of this attack, he has a serious bite wound in his back, hand and is scalped. The man was taken to the hospital in his village but unfortunately they could not do anything for him due to the lack of resources. They send him to the hospital in Kathmandu. Unfortunately, the hospital in Kathmandu has no place for him. Two days later, the MRO foundation took him in and he stayed overnight with the organization to be taken to another hospital the next day. When I was allowed to change his bandages, I noticed that he does not need care and he wanted to go home as soon as possible. Mister has goats to look after; this is his source of income. He has no family or network around him to support him.
-Boy B. 5 years old burned his right leg when he was just born. From their culture it is customary to keep newborn warm by the open fire. When he was laid down by the fire, he rolled with his legs in it. This has resulted in his right leg being completely burned, he has lost his foot and his leg is in a bent position. He is also missing part of his left foot.
The patients are currently being seen by several doctors. Boy M. may need chemo, or they'll cut off his right side of the face completely and have it reconstructed by a plastic surgeon (however, because of his age, it's uncertain how the face will grow with the reconstruction). Mr. P. is in hospital but it is still uncertain whether he will continue his care. Rehabilitation can take several months, making him prefer to go home because of his income. It is now being looked at whether further care in the hospital can be arranged from his village. Boy B. is currently receiving surgical help to treat the contracture of the leg.
Because MRO has acquired a better name in Nepal, this has led to the doctors having confidence in the organization. In some cases they treat patients cheaper or for free. However, the other healthcare costs are not reimbursed. Think of; diagnostics (X-ray, MRI, blood tests, ultrasound) and/or aftercare (medication, aids, etc.).
These people desperately need your support. By donating, we can provide the care they need. Even if you cannot donate large amounts, by donating a small amount a lot can be done, think of purchasing; bandages/medications/aids such as a wheelchair, respiratory equipment, etc. which can ultimately help to provide better aftercare and a more positive future perspective for patients.
