The Gaza Sunbirds are a grassroots para-cycling team turned humanitarian lifeline, operating in one of the world’s most devastated regions. Originally founded in 2020 to empower amputee athletes through sport, the team has dramatically shifted its mission since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023. With conventional aid systems often blocked or overwhelmed, the Sunbirds have used their intimate knowledge of the Strip—and their bicycles—to deliver urgent, life-saving support to civilians caught in crisis.

From the start of the conflict, the Gaza Sunbirds mobilized a network of disabled athletes, volunteers, and local partners to provide food, clean water, medical supplies, shelter, and hygiene kits to displaced families. They have distributed over 120,000 kg of food, built temporary shelters for hundreds of people, and hosted events like “Pizza Parties” to lift the spirits of children enduring trauma. Operating in areas many aid organizations cannot reach, they’ve become a vital local force for survival and solidarity.

By sourcing 90% of their supplies within Gaza, they stimulate the local economy while meeting urgent needs. The Sunbirds are not just athletes—they are frontline responders, navigating destroyed streets on bikes, delivering hope and humanity in a place where both are in short supply.
