Help SuLTA Develop Safe Community Parks for Vulnerable Tanzanian Families.

In Tanzania’s fastest-growing cities, the lack of safe and green public space has become a silent crisis. Thousands of children are growing up in dense neighbourhoods where the only open ground is a dusty, neglected lot or a hazardous street corner. Rapid urbanisation has swallowed community spaces, and what remains is often degraded, polluted, or simply abandoned. For low-income families that can not afford to pay for privately owned playgrounds, they have nowhere to go. Children play beside traffic, parents worry every time they send their kids outside, and the simple childhood experience of running and playing on grass or sitting under tree shade is unknown to many poor families.

In Arusha City, two designated public spaces tell this story perfectly: bare patches of ground, no shade, no benches, no play equipment, baking in the dry season and flooding when the rains arrive. The communities around them have stopped imagining these spaces could ever be anything else.

Sustainable Landscapes Tanzania (SuLTA) was founded to address these issues in collaboration with local communities. As a newly registered Tanzanian NGO, SuLTA lacks the startup capital to begin its operations on the ground. This fundraiser is that first step, the seed funding that transforms SuLTA from an organisation of proposals and potential into one that is actively in the field, delivering real and visible results for real communities.

Your donation is what makes this work possible, and it will directly fund the restoration of two neglected public open spaces in Arusha City into safe, shaded, and child-friendly community parks. Each site will be cleared and prepared by community volunteers and planted with fast-growing indigenous shade trees. Basic community seating will be installed, giving mothers, elders, and neighbours a comfortable place to gather while children play safely nearby. A celebratory Community Planting Day at each site will bring the entire surrounding neighbourhood together to plant their park collectively, turning a neglected patch of ground into a space that genuinely belongs to the community. Above all, each park will be handed over to the community-led Green Space Stewardship Committee, which will maintain, protect, and improve the green space permanently. These are not temporary volunteers. They are empowered community leaders with the authority and the skills to keep their park alive long after SuLTA’s direct involvement ends.

Alongside the park restoration work, your donation will fund six months of SuLTA’s core operational costs. It is also our hope that the results from this pilot project will unlock other funding, enabling SuLTA to scale from two parks to dozens of communities across Tanzania.

Any amount helps plant indigenous shade trees, fund a full day of community volunteer mobilisation, cover a week of field officer transport and operations, or restore one full park site or public open space from bare ground to a shaded, living, community-owned green space.

SuLTA is governed by a board of eight members and operates under Tanzanian laws and regulations, with an independent annual audit. Every euro is accounted for.
