“Marita Brings Life Foundation”/ speaking at UN Earth Day in New Yor
"Marita Brings Life Foundation" focuses on parents of and children with trisomy 13, 18, and related conditions.
Following my experience with the birth and passing of my daughter Marita, who had trisomy 18, and a dissertation study on the denial of care for children with trisomy 13 and 18, the initiative for the Marita Brings Life Foundation was born.
We aim to support and better inform parents of children with trisomy 18, 13, and other rarer trisomies.
Too often, parents in the Netherlands, Belgium, as well as Germany and the United States, and many other countries are confronted with:
- incomplete or one-sided information
- limited access to care
- decisions that are not always made in consultation with the parents
We want to change that.
Our foundation will:
- guide and support parents
- provide honest and up-to-date information
- advocate for equal and appropriate care
- raise awareness about the lack of “informed consent”
- bring attention to the issue of “obstetric violence,” where mothers are placed in impossible and traumatic situations
We have the unique opportunity to bring this issue to international attention during United Nations Earth Day on April 22nd in New York, through a speech. The event will be broadcast in 140 countries. We are deeply grateful for this opportunity!

Naar aanleiding van mijn ervaring met de geboorte en het overlijden van mijn dochter Marita met trisomie 18, en een dissertatieonderzoek naar zorgweigering voor kinderen met trisomie 13 en 18, ontstond het initiatief voor de stichting Marita Brengt Leven.
Wij willen ouders van kinderen met trisomie 18, 13 en andere meer zeldzame trisomieën ondersteunen en beter informeren.
Te vaak krijgen ouders in Nederland, België maar ook Duitsland en de VS en in vele andere landen te maken met:
- onvolledige of eenzijdige informatie
- beperkte toegang tot zorg
- beslissingen die niet altijd in overleg met hen worden genomen
Wij willen dat veranderen. Onze stichting zal:
- ouders begeleiden en ondersteunen
- eerlijke en actuele informatie beschikbaar maken
- opkomen voor gelijke en passende zorg
- het debat aanzwengelen over een gebrek aan “informed consent”
- De vraag van “obstetric violence” onder de aandacht brengen, waarbij moeders in onmogelijke situaties worden gebracht
Daarnaast hebben wij de bijzondere kans om deze problematiek internationaal onder de aandacht te brengen tijdens de United Nations Earth Day op 22 april in New York in de vorm van een speech. De show wordt uitgezonden in 140 verschillende landen. Wij zijn enorm dankbaar hiervoor!
