Suli vrij van plastic!

Wij zijn Jozua Suitela en de familie Daniel & Shari Suitela-Lainsamputty. Van de in totaal 6 maanden, verblijven wij momenteel al zo’n 2 maanden in het dorp Suli op de Molukken. Dit is het dorp waar onze familie vandaan komt. 

Plastic afval is een groot probleem op de Molukken. Het maakt een groot deel uit van het straatbeeld. Langs de kust, in de zee en tussen de huizen…waar je ook kijkt, overal ligt plastic.

Wij willen graag kleinschalig een steentje bijdragen en met oplossingen komen. Een aantal weken geleden kwamen we met het idee om een opruimactie te beginnen aan de kust van Suli. Zodoende hebben we zaterdag 19 oktober, samen met de Sulinese gemeenschap heel veel plastic van het strand gehaald. 2200 kilo om precies te zijn. 

Echter is 1 actie niet voldoende. Er moeten meerdere acties opgezet worden en er moeten structurelere oplossingen komen. Doordat er geen vuilnisbakken zijn op het strand en er ook geen personeel is om het op te halen, zullen mensen geneigd zijn om het afval gewoon weer op de grond te gooien. Met steun vanuit Nederland willen wij  kliko’s kopen en een systeem opzetten dat ervoor zorgt dat het vuil wordt opgehaald. 

Met jullie hulp hopen we het verschil te maken zodat de wereld een stukje schoner wordt!

Suli free of plastic!

We are Jozua Suitela and family Daniel & Shari Suitela-Lainsamputty. Of the in total 6 months, we’re already staying about 2 months in the village Suli in the Moluccas. This is the village our family comes from.

Plastic waste is a major problem in the Moluccas. It forms a big part of the street scene. Along the coast, in the sea and between the houses... wherever you look, you’ll find plastic.

We would like to contribute on a small scale and come up with solutions. A few weeks ago we came up with the idea to start a clean-up campaign on the coast of Suli. On Saturday October the 19th, together with the community of Suli, we picked up a lot of plastic from the beach. 2200 kilos to be precise. 

However, 1 clean-up campaign is not enough. More actions and structural solutions are needed. Since there are no garbage cans on the beach and there is no pick-up service, people will be tempted to throw plastic on the ground. With support from the Netherlands, we would like to buy wheelie bins and set up a system that ensures that the garbage will be taken to the garbage dump.
