Wederopbouw tunnelkassen Burin Land & Farming cooperatief
Tuin Kansrijk x Burin Land and Farming Cooperative
“It is not just a game, and not just a festival—it is a way of saying that Burin continues to live, organize, and remain. In a land under attack, even a kite can become a statement. Even if you kill us and don't want us to fly, our kite will still fly.
The message coming from Burin is simple yet powerful: to remain is resistance. Cultivating the land is resistance. Creating spaces for play, community, and togetherness for children is resistance. Planting the land is resistance. Living on the land is resistance. Smiling, breathing—this is resistance.”
Verwoeste kassen
Kansrijk farm x Burin Land and Farming Cooperative
A few months ago we at Kansrijk-farm (a CSA close to Utrecht) started a collaboration with the Burin Land and Farming Cooperative. We started this project because we wanted to express our solidarity with our Palestinian colleagues, who are living under constant violence of settlers and the occupation army. As a farmer community, it hurts and makes us angry that simply growing vegetables on their land has to be such a struggle for them. We want to turn this pain and anger into action, by standing with our colleagues for as long as necessary.
The Cooperative
Burin is a village to the south of Nablus, in the northern West Bank. It consists of 25 farmers, who take care of 25 dunams (2.5 hectares), of which 6 dunams are greenhouses. In addition to farming, community work in the village and education are important parts of the Cooperative’s work. For instance, 15% of their earnings is invested in projects in the village.
Life under occupation
Underlying everything the Cooperative does, is the struggle to remain on their land, and to take care of their land in freedom. Sinds we got in touch with our twin farmers earlier this year, we’ve seen plenty of examples of the ongoing violence israel perpetrates. Their olivegroves have been set to fire by settlers several times (hundreds of trees have been burned), the army has denied them access to the greenhouses for weeks (3000 tomato plants dried out, full harvest lost), the army has used bulldozers to destroy olive trees, the have been shot at with live ammunition, and the army regularly raids the village. All of this is part of the broader context of the apartheid, oppression, ethnic cleansing and genocide that israel enacts on the Palestinian people.
Kite Festival
In July the people of Burin celebrated the yearly kite festival. Children and volunteers worked hard on hundreds of kites, which the children of the village and surrounding villages flew on the 10th of July. Kites symbolise freedom, resistance, and dignity. As our colleague Ghassan put it:
“It is not just a game, and not just a festival—it is a way of saying that Burin continues to live, organize, and remain. In a land under attack, even a kite can become a statement. Even if you kill us and don't want us to fly, our kite will still fly.
The message coming from Burin is simple yet powerful: to remain is resistance. Cultivating the land is resistance. Creating spaces for play, community, and togetherness for children is resistance. Planting the land is resistance. Living on the land is resistance. Smiling, breathing—this is resistance.”
Destroyed greenhouses
We saw beautiful videos of smiling children on the ground and a deep blue sky filled with kites. What the videos didn’t show were the settlers shooting at the kites, or the army that had raided the village that morning in order to intimidate the people. For them, a festival in which Palestinian children fly kites is something they want to suppress. Sure enough, a few days later settlers took revenge: the greenhouses of the Cooperative were destroyed. The plastic cut to shreds, and the irrigation system systematically destroyed.
Rebuilding
The people of Burin will not be chased from their land, and as always, the Cooperative wants to rebuild what the settlers destroyed. In coordination with them, we at Kansrijk have started this fundraiser. We would like to collect enough money to repair the greenhouses and the irrigation system, and to build a fence around the greenhouses in order to deter the settlers. Let’s show our friends and colleagues in Burin that we stand with them. Together we are strong & Free Palestine!
