Behandeling botkanker Thyra

Behandeling botkanker Thyra
Stephan Bijlsma

Beschikbaar in:  Nederlands

Thyra is a wonderful, sweet and cheerful young dog of four years old.
For my work (I work for an animal shelter / animal ambulance) she regularly helps with fundraising campaigns for the animals, at workshops for children, she helps people with a fear of dogs, and so on.
She's also a source of comfort for all volunteers and customers, for example if someone has to say goodbye to his / her deceased animal which the pet Ambulance has foun, they can always hug her.

But now Thyra needs help herself!

Thyra hasn't been walking comlpletely normal lately, after checking at the vet she got this advise; painkillers, rest and if it stayed that way she had to go for X-rays after a week or two.

Fortunately, I decided to make an appointment for X-rays the day after! Because it didn't feel right.

Eight months after I had to say goodbye to my beautiful, super sweet and stable male (also due to cancer) Thyra received the (provisional) diagnosis of bone cancer after the x-rays…..

When I saw the photos my world came to an end…… eight months after I had to say goodbye to my boy i might have to say goodbye again, but now from my other dog (/ family member), my little girl Thyra. Especially the people who know us can testify to how strong my bond is with my dogs; we are always together and fully attuned to each other. This is unacceptable!

And so I immediately asked the vet to forward her file to the Medical Center for Animals in Amsterdam and we were able to go there a few days later for an intake and a CT scan.

Fortunately, i found out very early, and there are no metastases. But unfortunately it was definitively an osteosarcoma / bone cancer, and unfortunately the tumor is so close to the joint that the only solution is to amputate her front leg….

Fortunately, Thyra has been admitted to a study testing a new vaccine against (bone) cancer. This vaccine is very promising and will hopefully save many animal and human lives in the future!!

In addition to the fact that this vaccine can save her life, she contributes to a (more) effective treatment of this very nasty form of cancer.

Unfortunately, the clinic receives no subsidies or support and there are no major donors. The research is therefore very expensive.

Because Thyra is such a great dog, is still so young and the research has helped, we naturally started the process immediately and she has now received her first vaccine.

However, due to the high costs, we could use some help with this. In my work I get the chance to help many animals and people, but unfortunately this doesn't earn much. Because I live alone with my foster son, all costs and all worries fall on me.

Cost overview:

So far I have payed € 320 for the x-rays and consultations with my own vet.

€1294 for the first CT scan, which is repeated again eight weeks after the operation, at a further €1294

In addition, participation in the study (for the costs of the vaccine, guidance, control photos, etc.) costs € 5500 per year!!

The costs of the leg amputation are added to this.

Thyra also has to go to Amsterdam every two weeks for the vaccine in the coming period, then every two months in the long term. Regular control photos will also be taken to exclude metastases.

In addition, I have purchased aids such as a special harness for post-amputation support and had to make a number of adjustments at home.

This is why we could use some help! Any contribution, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated!!

Anything to give my sweet girl a chance!

After the loss of Taifun 8 months ago, we had just recovered and planned a litter with Thyra, so that she would be less lonely. The plan was to keep a puppy, of course all possible health tests had been done on both dogs. We actually planned a litter for her previous heat, but then Taifun got sick. Now Thyra is in season again, and the moment she was ready for a mating/litter, our fight to keep her alive started instead... Thyra has suffered a lot from the loss of Taifun, an second dog was therefore very valuable to her. This is of course a disappointment, but losing Thyra, and ending up without a dog would be the biggest blow to me…..

So that's why we're doing everything we can to save her! If the target amount is reached against all expectations, every euro will be used for next year's costs. If Thyra unfortunately dies, against all expectations and despite al the care, I will agree with the MCD that any remaining amount will be used to save a dog from an owner who also doesn't have a very high income.

On behalf of Thyra, thanks in advance for the help!

Hopefully she will soon be able to take her place again as a favorite of all volunteers of the Animal Shelter, the Animal Ambulance, and resume her duties to help the foundation and help people!

Thyra's story will be further shared on the Facebook page where I first posted the stories of Thyra and Taifun and their possible future litter. Now only Thyra remains, but hopefully we can provide others with good information who are dealing with (bone) cancer, leg amputations, and so on.

So please follow her story further via facebook.com/AmandiLeones.
