Daretzi attends the school we have been supporting with our Escuela Blanche Dael Foundation since 2008. Two years ago, I heard from her parents that she was very sick. She suffers from the rare disease Encephalitis. In Guatemala, access to health care and medicine is not a given. In late 2023, I saw and spoke to Daretzi again and she seemed to be doing a little better. She then became my adopted child because she is the happiest and bravest girl I have ever seen.

However, in May of this year she suffered a serious relapse and since then she has been in the hospital in Guatemala City, about 5 hours travel from where she lives. She is in urgent need of medication which is expensive and her parents cannot afford.
