In februari 2024 kregen Bastian en Hannah Kardol het nieuws dat hun twee zoons, Manuel (4 jaar oud) en Olivier (1 jaar oud), de spierziekte van Duchenne hebben. Dit betekent dat hun spieren geleidelijk aan kracht zullen verliezen, wat uiteindelijk leidt tot verlies van mobiliteit en een verkorte levensverwachting. Deze progressieve ziekte zal ervoor zorgen dat de jongens op jonge leeftijd een rolstoel nodig hebben. Het huis waarin ze momenteel wonen is niet geschikt voor hun toekomstige behoeften.
Verhuizen dus
Bastian en Hannah wonen momenteel in Houten, een dorp centraal gelegen in Nederland. Houten is waar hun familie, vrienden, school en kerk zijn. Deze gemeenschap omringt hen en biedt de broodnodige steun. Bovendien stelt wonen in Houten hen in staat om hun banen te behouden, wat cruciaal is voor het betalen van een hypotheek, nu en in de toekomst.
Een nieuw huis kopen
Huizen die geschikt zijn voor hun toekomstige behoeften (zie FAQ) kosten tenminste € 850.000,00.
De ouders van Hannah en Bastian zijn druk bezig om uit te zoeken hoe ze zo direct mogelijk hun kinderen kunnen helpen met dit bedrag. Echter is het duidelijk dat dit gehele bedrag niet door de naaste familie betaald zal kunnen worden.
Kan de gemeente Houten hier aan bijdragen?
Er zijn inmiddels meerdere gesprekken geweest met de gemeente Houten. Zij hebben aangegeven dat ze alleen financieel kunnen bijdragen aan specifieke verbouwingskosten, maar niet aan een huis zelf.
Dus we hebben jullie hulp nodig
We hopen € 200.000,00 in te zamelen, zodat Bastian en Hannah een geschikt huis kunnen vinden voor Manuel en Olivier.
Wanneer willen ze verhuizen?
Manuel is inmiddels 4 jaar oud en de eerste symptomen beginnen zich te vertonen. Manuel draagt sinds juni 2024 ‘s nachts spalken om het verkorten van de kuitspieren wat te vertragen. Het tempo van het verloop is per patiënt verschillend, maar zeker is dat ze op jonge leeftijd in een rolstoel terechtkomen. Daarom willen Bastian en Hannah in 2026 in een geschikt huis wonen. Dit betekent dat ze nu op zoek zijn naar een passend huis, zodat er tijd is voor de verhuizing en aanpassingen.
Jullie donaties zullen direct worden gebruikt voor:
- Het kopen van een geschikt huis;
- Het aanpassen van de slaapkamers en badkamer; en
- Het creëren van rolstoel toegankelijke ingang.

Wat is de spierziekte van Duchenne?
De spierziekte van Duchenne is een genetische aandoening, die voornamelijk jongens treft. Het veroorzaakt progressieve spierzwakte en verlies van spiermassa.
Hoe snel vordert de ziekte?
De symptomen beginnen meestal op jonge leeftijd. Kinderen met Duchenne verliezen geleidelijk aan hun spierkracht, waardoor zij vaak al voor hun 10e verjaardag een rolstoel nodig hebben.
Draagt de gemeente Houten bij aan de kosten?
De gemeente Houten zal alleen bijdragen aan kosten rondom bepaalde aanpassingen, maar niet aan de aankoop of de hele verbouwing. Daarom is uw hulp van groot belang bij het inzamelen van de benodigde fondsen voor de aankoop van een geschikt huis.
Waarom is een aangepast huis noodzakelijk?
Een aangepast huis is nodig om ervoor te zorgen dat Manuel en Olivier vrij en veilig kunnen bewegen, ook wanneer zij in een rolstoel zitten. Dit omvat brede deuren, een aangepaste badkamer, en slaapkamers op de begane grond.
Kan de familie hun huidige huis renoveren?
Helaas niet. Er is geen manier waarop het huidige huis van Bastian en Hannah kan worden aangepast om in de toekomst aan de behoeften van de jongens te voldoen. De ruimte is te klein, te smal en heeft te veel verdiepingen. De familie heeft een ruimte nodig waarin Manuel en Olivier zich vrij en veilig kunnen bewegen, zelfs als ze in rolstoelen zitten. Dit omvat bredere deuren, rolstoeltoegankelijke badkamers en slaapkamers op de begane grond.
Waarom willen ze in Houten blijven wonen?
Het stelt Bastian en Hannah in staat om hun banen te behouden en in de huidige, kerkelijke gemeente te blijven. Bovendien wonen familie en vrienden in Houten en hebben de jongens er een fijne school. Dit alles vormt samen een cruciaal ondersteuningsnetwerk, dat ze graag willen behouden.

Kan ik ook op andere manieren helpen?

Zijn de donaties belastingaftrekbaar?

Zijn er plannen voor een stichting speciaal voor Manuel en Olivier?
Ja, familieleden zijn bezig met het opzetten van een stichting met behulp van een notaris. Deze stichting is nog niet actief.
Moeten Bastian en Hannah belasting betalen over mijn donatie?
Bastian en Hannah hoeven geen belasting te betalen over donaties van € 2.658,00 of minder, per familie/huishouden per jaar. Voor donaties boven dit bedrag kan schenkbelasting van toepassing zijn. Kan ik doneren vanuit het buitenland?
Ja, dit is mogelijk en kan in verschillende valuta worden gedaan. De meeste buitenlandse donateurs hebben niet te maken met schenkbelasting en kunnen daarom zoveel doneren als ze willen zonder dat Bastian en Hannah daar belasting over hoeven te betalen.
Dear family and friends…
In February this year, Bastian and Hannah Kardol received the devastating news that their two sons, Manuel (4 years old) and Olivier (1 year old), both have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a debilitating condition that permanently affects the muscles. Children who have Duchenne gradually lose all mobility and have a shorter life expectancy. That means that Manuel and Olivier could be wheelchair-bound as early as their 6th birthday and will need long-term care and support.
As you can imagine, this has completely upheaved all of their lives, and Bastian and Hannah have much to consider as they prepare to give the boys the best possible future. Their main concern at the moment is finding a suitable, handicap-accessible house before the children lose their ability to walk. Their current home is not set up to accommodate the boys’ needs in the future. They have to move.
Searching for a new house
Bastian and Hannah currently live in Houten – a centrally located village in the Netherlands. They have an incredible community of family, friends, schools, and church members who will be a lifeline for them as they navigate this disease for decades to come. Staying in Houten also allows Bastian and Hannah to keep their current jobs, which is essential to paying for the boys’ long-term care and the family’s housing.
However, their current home is a small, three-storey townhouse (as is typical for the Netherlands) and houses that can accommodate children with disabilities (see FAQs) cost at least 850,000 Euros.
What support is currently available
The family has had several conversations with the government and local social services regarding available support for the boys. Thankfully, some financial support will become available as the boys’ condition progresses – such as help retrofitting the house for wheelchairs – but no financial support is available for purchasing a suitable home.
Hannah’s and Bastian's parents have both committed to contributing as much as possible, as have close family members. However, despite this immediate help, it is clear that securing an appropriate house for the family cannot be done by close family alone.
How you can help
We hope to raise €200,000.00 so that Bastian and Hannah can afford a handicap-friendly house for Manuel and Olivier by 2026. After looking over their finances, this is the amount they have determined they need to make this a reality.

Why 2026?
Manuel is now 4 years old, and the first symptoms have already begun to show. Manuel has started wearing leg splints at night to slow down the shortening of his calf muscles and doctors have indicated that he could lose his ability to walk within the next 2 years. Knowing this, they don’t want to wait. Making the move now means the family has enough time to make the necessary changes to their future house.

Can the family renovate their current house?
Unfortunately, no. There is no way Bastian and Hannah’s current house can be adapted to meet the boys’ needs in the future. The space is too small, too narrow, and too many stories. The family needs a space in which Manuel and Olivier can move freely and safely, even when they are in wheelchairs. This includes wider doors, handicap-accessible bathrooms, and bedrooms located on the ground floor.
Why do they want to stay in Houten?
Houten is home. Many family and friends live in Houten, along with the family’s church community and great and supportive schools who have assured the family they will accommodate the boys in their education. Houten is also located near their work, which allows them to keep their current jobs. This network of care will prove essential as Bastian and Hannah navigate these challenges.
